Minnesota Update!
Minnesota
Update - On the eve of wolf hunt in the state, disagreements are
running rampant and the debate is heating up about the need for a wolf
hunt in the coming days. This comes with the news that 22 wolves were
killed so far in the neighboring state of Wisconsin. Wolfwatcher returns
to court (re: Wisconsin's wolf hunt) on Dec. 20th.

The Wolves Need You!!!
Dear Friends,
The League has long advocated for the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to release new wolves into the wild to boost the wild population’s numbers and improve genetic diversity. After four years with no new releases of Mexican wolves into the Blue Range Wolf Recovery Area (BRWRA), a release of a few new wolves is finally being proposed, through two documents: a Mexican Wolf Blue Range Reintroduction Project Replacement Release Outline for Arizona 2013 (Release Proposal), and a Mexican Wolf Blue Range Reintroduction Project Initial Wolf Release Arizona Pack Management Plan 2012-2013 (Pack Management Plan).
New releases are a step in the right direction. Unfortunately, there are some problems with the proposal and the management plans for the releases (see talking points in sample letter below).
Please send comments to Interagency Field Team Leader Chris Bagnoli at Arizona Game and Fish and to USFWS Southwest Regional Director Benjamin Tuggle at Benjamin_Tuggle@fws.gov telling them that while we are pleased about new releases are planned we still have concerns.
Here is a sample email:
Dear Mr. Bagnoli and Dr. Tuggle,
I am pleased that the AZGF has proposed releases of more Mexican wolves into the wild. However while proposing to release a few new wolves into the wild after four years of no releases is a step in the right direction, the Mexican Wolf Blue Range Reintroduction Project Replacement Release Outline for Arizona 2013 is inadequate.
1. The resumption of killing and removing endangered Mexican wolves over livestock conflicts outlined in the Pack Management Plan is unacceptable. Policies like those described in the plan are one of the reasons the Mexican wolf population numbers and genetic health are still of such great concern.
2. If the Mexican gray wolf is going to succeed, several critical steps must be implemented immediately:
For those who want more in-depth information:
First, the Pack Management Plan that accompanies the Release Proposal states that any wolf implicated in “nuisance” behavior, including livestock conflicts, three or more times in one year will be killed or placed in permanent captivity. This is return to Standard Operating Procedure 13, which was rescinded in 2009. Prior to 2009, the USFWS killed or removed 92 wolves from the wild population because of nuisance behavior or conflicts with livestock.
Second, the release proposal is woefully inadequate to foster the needed population growth or increased genetic health.
The proposal only replaces the wolves killed illegally in Arizona last year and ignores wolves killed in New Mexico or lost to other causes. Even if it replaced all the wolves that died in the past year, it would be inadequate, given that the last official count found only 58 wolves in the wild. The initial recovery plan predicted that we would have over 100 wild wolves by this year. The wild population will not be restored to viable numbers by only releasing wolves to replace those that are illegally killed. Many more releases are needed.
While we are pleased that the release proposal identifies and addresses the critical need for “genetic rescue” of the wild population of Mexican wolves, the release of a few wolves falls far too short of accomplishing meaningful genetic rescue. From 2005-2008 only five new wolves were released and no new wolves have been released since November 2008. Now both populations are at risk genetically because of the low growth rate of the wild population, which is largely due to aggressive management removals of wolves and the failure to release sufficient numbers of wolves from the captive population.
The genetic situation is part of USFWS justification for the proposal to capture the aging Rim Pack alpha female, return her to captivity, and surgically remove her remaining viable eggs for future artificial reproduction. The capture of one pure McBride lineage wolf and the release of one or two cross-lineage wolves, which constitutes the full extent of this current release proposal, fall far short of a comprehensive science-based genetic “rescue” or “re-rescue” plan and will do little to grow the wild population at the necessary rate.
Because the agency is using presence of livestock as a justification not to release wolves into a wider range of the available area in Arizona, and because the USFWS has failed to change the rule to allow direct releases into New Mexico, almost every release alternative involves releasing wolves into or near the territory of an existing wild pack. This is less than ideal and can be avoided by releasing the EA and using proactive measures with livestock.

2. If the Mexican gray wolf is going to succeed, several critical steps must be implemented immediately:
- Develop, adopt, and implement an aggressive genetic rescue/re-rescue plan;
- Revise the Endangered Species Act Section 10(j) rule to authorize direct releases of captive-raised Mexican wolves to any geographic location within the designated BRWRA (currently new wolves can only be released into Arizona, which excludes excellent habitat in New Mexico);
- Eliminate “presence of livestock” as a rationale for excluding areas from consideration for wolf releases (There are plenty of places to release wolves in the Blue Range Wolf Recovery Area, but many appear to be excluded simply because of active livestock grazing operations in the project area; proactive measures have been successfully used to avoid depredations and the recovery of Mexican gray wolves is the appropriate priority); and
- Resume and expedite recovery planning for the Mexican gray wolf (The recovery planning process for the Mexican wolf is currently stalled and significantly behind schedule. At this point, the release of a draft Recovery Plan is not expected until sometime in 2014. Mexican wolves need and deserve better performance by the USFWS).

24 Montanna wolves killed so far...
According to Montana FWP Wolf hunting season status , 24 wolves have been killed so far.
We are very concerned that the objective set by FWP will not be met .
This trouble us in the sense that it could advance the timetable to allow snaring.
Wolves & Livestock in perspective...
The Wolf Army..
Wolves are NO serious threat to the livestock industry...these stats
are not only applicable to the USA, but corresponds with stats from
other countries where the wolf is still present...
A study
published in the journal of Ecological Economics found that wolf
depredations account for less than 0.01% of the annual gross income of
ranchers in Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana.
A May 2011 USDA cattle death report added more data proving that
livestock death is only fractionally attributed to wolf kills. For
example, of the nearly 4,000,000 cattle and calf deaths in the US in
2010, predators caused only 5% and of that, wolves caused a meager 0.2%.
Moreover, of the $2.4 billion value these deaths cost only 0.1% of that
value came as a result of a wolf kill.
Volatile meat prices,
increased land and fuel prices, disease, weather, domestic dogs, and
even human thieves are much bigger threats.
Though wolves may
have some localized impacts on individual livestock operators, those can
be significantly reduced with responsible husbandry. There are lots of
things responsible livestock managers can do to protect their livestock
that don’t involve bullets. In most cases ranchers are fully compensated
by taxpayers for any losses.
Behind many of the exaggerated
and horrific stories of livestock losses trotted out by the anti-wolf
folks is an untold story of poor animal husbandry.

Minnesota wolf hunt
Minnesota wolf hunt is about to begin on November 3, but there is still lots of disagreements about the hunt...
Throughout Minnesota's history, the wolf has been both mystical and
misunderstood. Some find the nighttime howl of the animal soothing and
comforting; the same sound can send shivers down the spine of a cattle
farmer....
Federally protected for decades, the hunters are about to become the hunted.
Good news is that The Native American tribes of Northern Minnesota have
banded together, forbidding the hunting of wolves on their lands. The
White Earth tribe is taking this hunt personally.
Several members of the wolf clan on the reservation have also strongly opposed the new hunt.

Utah :
Utah :
Not even any confirmed wolves in Utah yet almost every member of Utah’s
congressional delegation has co-sponsored legislation to remove wolves
from the endangered species act.
Representative Jason Chaffetz
wants Utah and other states to manage their wolf populations without
interference from the federal government. “You’ve got farmers in
Northern Utah that are concerned about the encroachment...."
According to the Utah Department of Agriculture--this year five calves
and eight sheep have been confirmed killed by wolves—a cost $5,000.
These wolves were thought to have wandered into the state. The
Departments’ position is to keep all wolves out of Utah.

New Mexico: Why the secrecy ?
We all followed the story of the Mexican alpha female wolf that was
captured and removed from her pack for supposedly killing 6 cattle in SW
corner of New Mexico.
On October 23 WildEarth Guardians
received 870 pages of documents about the planned removal of the wolf .
Folks can imagine with 870 pages, a lot was learned about the decision.
Amazingly 80 per cent of the documents were blacked out — redacted.

Utah's startling statistics on wolf predation.
VIA..The Wolf Army
Very
startling statistics in the report from Utah about wolf predation on
livestock from a man that knows his numbers- Ed Bangs. He’s responsible
for monitoring wolf reintroduction for the US Fish and Wildlife
Services.
Bangs says since 1978, there have been a total of
4200 livestock reported killed by wolves across the country and more
than 1200 wolves were killed in response. See country as across the
USA...
4200 since 1978...??? We can only ask then why does all
these Cattlemen's Associations have so much power and influence to
determine wolf policies...
One can only conclude that it has far more to do with hunting privileges than with losses due to wolf predation...

Idaho Hell for wolves!!!
2012 Gray Wolf Hunting and Trapping Seasons
Apparently having a wolf hunt seven months
of the year and up to ten months in parts of the state (Lolo and
Selway) isn’t good enough for Idaho, now the Gem state has
made life even more miserable for wolves, if that’s possible.
According to new rules there will be a wolf hunt somewhere in the state
all year-long.
2012 Gray Wolf Hunting and Trapping Seasons
and General Rules
Panhandle (1, 2, 3, 4, 4A, 5, 6, 7, 9)
Aug 30 – Mar 31 - 5 wolf hunting tags may be used
July 1 – Mar 31 – 5 wolf hunting tags may be used. Private land only.
Read the gory details and grit your teeth.
It’s death by a thousand cuts. The state is slowly strangling the life
out of wolves. Drip, drip, drip, wolf blood flows, families are torn
apart, puppies die. This is what passes as responsible wolf management.
Are you watching this USFWS? Do you still
think Idaho is doing a peachy job of caring for wolves? You should hang
your heads in shame for putting your stamp of approval on this. Everyone
who had a hand in turning wolves over to this state, is responsible for
the slaughter of innocents.
This is why we have to work harder than
ever to stop this madness!! They are thumbing their noses at every wolf
advocate and wildlife watcher that care about these animals. Our
opinions mean nothing to them.
===
Idaho to make wolf hunting year round
State to always have at least one area open to wolf hunting-
New rules! Idaho has decided in effect to
always have at least one place in the state open to wolf hunting on a
rotating basis. This is in addition to the general wolf hunt that goes
for about half a year. Wolf hunting began July 1 this year on private
land in northern Idaho. The general wolf hunt will begin Aug. 30 and go
until March 31. However, some units will remain open until June 30.
Then on July 1, 2013 private land in northern Idaho will again open.
Under the new rules, there is no limit on how many wolves can be killed in total except in 5 wolf hunting units.

A Midnight Song
Rick Cantalupo
By the cover of night, you sing your song to the moon.
Knowing shortly that morning will be there soon.
Most people think,it's just a howl and a cry.
To me, it's just beautiful music that you sing to the sky.
Loyality to your pack,is to the end.
And your always willing to help one of your friends,
When night falls, you go out for the kill.
It's just for the food and not for the thrill.
You go out with the pack and hunt like men.
Always returning by morning to your den.
Your with your family every moment of the day.
Constantly protecting your pups from the prey.
So next time you howl, sing very loud.
Your a great family man and should be proud.
We all should be like you, giving our family so much love.
So keep on singing your song,to the stars above.

BAN STEEL TRAPS
- signatures: 4,080
- signature goal: 5,000
- Target: Governor of Nebraska
- Sponsored by: Animal Advocates
A
steel jaw trap set for a bobcat accidentally trapped a female mountain
lion in Nebraska. The injuries were so severe, the lion had to be
euthanized. The mountain lion was eliminated from the state in 1890 and
there is only a small breeding population of mountain lions in Nebraska,
less than 20. To have lost one to this cruel device is a major set-back
for the species.
When an animal steps on the steel-jaw trap spring, the trap's jaws slam shut, clamping down on the animal's limb or paw. As the animal struggles in excruciating pain to get free, the steel vise cuts into his or her flesh-often down to the bone-mutilating the leg or paw. Some animals, especially mothers desperate to return to their young, will even attempt to chew or twist off their trapped limbs. Not only are traps cruel, they are also completely indiscriminate. Every year, dogs, cats, birds, and other animals-including endangered species-are "accidentally" crippled or killed by steel jaw traps.
We ask Nebraska to ban the use of steel jaw traps.

TO STOP THE INHUMANE CRUELTY TO WOLVES....
SIGNATURE GOAL: 5,000 SIGNATURES COLLECTED 4,236

The
worldwide human encroachment on wild areas, the ever growing
agriculture and hunting industries, political fear mongering, and long
endured fairy tales and legends-the iconic, majestic wolf is being
pushed to the edge of extinction.
We the signed, want the United Nations to recognize, respect and encourage the value of the wolf worldwide and recognize the threat of impending extinction. We encourage all UN participating countries to manage wolves at the highest governmental tier. Enact special protection of the wolves against brutalization and persecution for political agendas or for purpose of monetary gain.
In the USA, we want President Barack Obama and Congress to relist the gray wolf into federal protection permanently at this point in time because they are near extinction or may already be extinct and they do not report all the killings to federal agencies from people who poach.
1. Ban all pups from being gased in their dens and put in sacks and smashed on the ground until dead. Also being bow and arrowed in their stomachs which causes such painful deaths and suffering.
2. Ban the use of all small dogs and cats and other small live animals they use to bait the wolf then gut shoot them.
3 Ban all hunters from raising and breeding cats and dogs for this purpose.
4. Ban all poaching, any hunters or person should be charged to the fullest extent of the law and lose their
license to ever hunt again.
5. Ban all trapping and snares which cause torture and excruciating pain to an animal
6. Ban all recordings of pups to lure the wolf to come to their help only to face gut shots.
7. Ban all the sadistic killings of the wolves with any kind of poison or other means that would
slow deaths.
8. Ban the use of helicopters chasing the wolfs until exhausted then shooting them not always killing them leaving them to suffer until death
9. Ban ATV's and snowmobiles on chasing the wolves until they are exhausted .Then the hunters run over
them and shoot them.
10. States where the wolf is delisted have poor management and do not consider breeding pairs and kill only the healthy
leaving the weak and the old to reproduce.
This is inhumane and cruelty to animals.
There are many writings from biologists regarding the wolf one being Gordan Haber of Alaska, who has written time and time again about how important the wolf is to the eco-system and other wildlife. The wolf never kills the healthy in a pack of elk of moose only the weak and old leaving the healthy to survive and reproduce. The hunters are the ones who kill and over hunt the healthy not the wolf.
The great love we have for our dogs, a love that leads people to risk their lives for their pet I have done atleast on one occasion, is perhaps a reflection of the early pack between our species. Even the wolf seems to have kept some promise, for the wolf is the only large predator that does not attack humans. Despite the benefits we have reaped from this pairing, we deal wolves mostly death instead of the respect they deserve. If the wolf is to survive, we must pay our debt. Lets hope that, we find it within ourselves to share again, to ensure that the wolf will forever have its space.

BUREAU OF PROTECTION
Help save the wolves...
Help wolves from extinction
Wolves are close to extinction as most of you know. they are killed for sport, fur, to keep up deer population, and as simple as killing 1 animal on a farm. just like in Wyoming 16 wolves died for one lamp. Quote From the Jackson Hole News and Guide:
“Solutions proposed by conservation groups, such as using flagging and guard dogs to scare wolves, won’t work in some open-range situations, Jimenez said. Killing wolves is the only solution, he said.”
thats what they said. if you guys were hungry and you haven\'t ate for days and you saw a lamp on a farm land would you kill it. i think 99.9% of people would. and if animals had more land and food you wouldn\'t see this as much. you say wolves are killers were not much different actually i take that back we are worse then them. wolves like you know kill and we kill them for doing that. this is what law says to us 2 wrongs don\'t make a right. and when they kill its bad, when we kill animals its a different story. Sarah palin is a big supporter on this.

Please help instead of watching and complaining about the wolves dieing. when you can help to prevent even if there is no way we can stop this at least you can say i was there i helped and i was there until the end. add as much people as you can. 1000,000 i know its a lot but as you see its not stopping with 100,000 we need a army to stop this. please help before its too late.

SAVE THE WOLVES IN AMERICA
the petition site
- Target: Obama
- Sponsored by: Dillon Wooddruff
Most
of you would sign this without me saying any thing but ill say
something anyways. Most wolves are killed for fun, fame and, greed. they
are killed with poison, traps, and guns with people that cant even
shoot straight makes a very painful death. populations so low where the
president or somebody should step in and say we need to save these
animals. But no its greedy people that wants money. wolves are killed to
rebuild the populations of deer. Are you kidding me. deer has been
around for along time and we still dont have a problem and, the thing is
if they would use there brains wolves kill the week so a hunter would
get a better chance of getting a strong deer. if they dont follow the
law of saving endanger animals why do we have to obey any rules. save
these creatures and send, share what ever you usually do, and hopefully
one day these animals will be saved.sign my other petition please http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/wolvesneedyourhelp/and also my group http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=152233834802263

Meaning does not lie in things, Meaning lies in us...
"Love is what we are born with. Fear is what we learn.
The spiritual journey is the unlearning of fear and prejudices and the acceptance of love back into our hearts.Love is the essential reality and our purpose on Earth. To be consciously aware of it, to experience love in ourselves and others, is the meaning of life. Meaning does not lie in things.
Meaning lies in us." ~Marianne Williamson♥ {Wolf in the willows}

Trail of Tears....we should not forget.
The United States Government, unable to conclude an agreement with the fuly aurhorized leaders of the Cherokee Nation, signed a treaty with a minority faction willing to cede the last remaining portion of the original Cherokee homeland on December 29, 1835. Despite the protests of the overwhelming majoroity of Cherokee people, the fraudulent "Treaty of New Echota" was ratified by the U.S. Senate by only a single vote on May 23, 1836. The Cherokees were given tow years from that date to remove to the Indian Territory. When the time had expired only 2,000 of the nearly 17,000 Cherokee remaining in the east had departed their ancestral homeland. In late May, 1838 General Winfield Scott and 7,000 federal and state troops arrived in the Cherokee Nation to enforce the removal. Cherokee families were forced from comfortable homes into 31 stockades and open millitary stations scattered throughout the Cherokee Nation in Southeast Tennessee, Western North Carolina, Northwest Georgia and Northeast Alabama. From the stockades the Cherokee were sent to the principal emigrating depots near Ross's Landing at Chattanooga, Tennessee, jfort Cass, near Calhoun, Tennessee, and a camp eight miles south of Fort Payne, Alabama.
In June 1838, the first three detachments of Cherokee captured by the Georgia Guard were forced to depart from Ross's Landing, Tennessee. Because of the gigh casualties of these frist groups, permission was given to delay the removal of the other groups until fall when it would be cooler. Also, the Cherokee leaders petitioned General Scott that they be allowed to conduct their own removal. Permission was granted. The remainder of the Cherokees began their trek west in the fall of 1838 in 13 detachments. After enduring an extremely severe winter, they arrived in the West in late winter and early spring of 1839. It has been estimated that from 2,00 to 4,000 of the 16,000 Cherokees dies as a result of the forced removal.
The true story of the forced removal for the Cherokee people is one of survival. In spirt of their hardships, they adapted and rebulit their homes and government. Only 12 years after removal, the Cherokee Female Seminary opened on these grounds as the first public institution of higher learning for females west of the Mississippi River.

I am but one voice...I am their voice...
If each of us would join in and fight these anti-wolf, government control freaks and sign petitions to save these beautiful creatures, we just may win the fight. I am against the cruel and inhumane trappings and killings of these creatures. They are not vicious....they are creatures of habit.
We fear what we don't know....
Wolves are the most misunderstood creature and for that hundreds, thousands of them lose their lives.
Wolves don't hunt us, we hunt them. I oppose the wolf hunts and I am "Howling for Justice."
